In the United States, on the other hand, over one third of the prison and jail population consists of people convicted of drug offenses!! The only thing the War on Drugs has done successfully over the past 30 years is triple the number of police officers in America, overcrowd our prisons with non-violent drug offenders, provide huge profits for domestic gangs, smugglers, and foreign cartels, and dramatically increase the number of violent crimes spurred by the high profits that flow from drug smuggling and distribution.
Prohibition of alcohol was a complete failure. Gambling is now virtually legal in every State; in fact, Washington State encourages and profits by gambling through the lotto!! Prostitution still flourishes on the streets and over the Internet. Making these activities "crimes" is worse than stupid; it's ineffective and costly.
